For those of you tracking the WOW cameras you may have noticed that quite a few deer are still passing by the three cameras despite the fact gun season has been under way for nearly three weeks. As a matter of fact over the past week quite a few bucks could be seen feeding during the early afternoon well before dark. But it was not always that way.

Let me tell you a little about the 200 acre site where the WOW cameras are located. The property is currently in its’ second year of management. Our goal is to balance the buck to doe ratio to a more biologically favorable number. Two does for every buck is our long term goal. Also we would like to see the age class of buck to increase. Our goal is to hold off shooting immature bucks till they reach the age of three or four years of age.

Last year we had a few food plots on the property and had quite a nice assortment of deer using the farm prior to the start of hunting season. As the season opened we started to loose deer. All told we photographed eighteen different bucks on the farm, some of the bucks had set up residence while others simply passed through posing for a picture or two.

The long and short of last years hunting season is all but one lucky buck was killed by the neighbors during last years hunting season. The local guys were good, they went seventeen for eighteen on the buck photographed on the WOW site. Drastic changes were needed if we were to reach our goals of balancing the buck to doe ratio and increase the age class.

The easiest way to manipulate deer movements is to change their feeding patterns.

The WOW site held deer well during the spring and summer months but lost deer during the fall, dramatically so during the firearms season. To combat the loss of deer we needed a preferred food source that would be available during late October, November and December. Biologically speaking the deer started to leave the site when their bodies started to crave carbohydrates rather than proteins. Corn is a great carbohydrate and is the answer to satisfy the deer’s late season cravings.

A large open field was plowed and planted with a quick to mature variety of grain corn. Grain corn produces more ears of corn than typical field corn, more ears equals more food for the deer. As a matter of fact about five thousand pounds of corn is produced per acre with this type of planting.

So far the corn planting is working well. About a half dozen different bucks were photographed last week on the WOW site. This year is much better than last years hunting season. If we are lucky, a handful of bucks will survive the next couple of weeks of hunting season and we will be off and running toward the successful realization of our management goals.

Some of you have questioned the white fence visible in photos taken at the cornfield corner site. The fence is a wildlife exclusion fence specifically designed to keep deer out of food plots. I’ve been very impressed so far this season.

The fence is manufactured by Gallagher Fence. This particular fence uses a portable charging unit powered by a battery and solar panel to maintain an electric charge within the fence. The fence also uses an innovative system of staggering the fence to make it nearly impossible for deer to simply jump into the plot. The fence is portable and reusable, fence posts can easily be pulled and the wire reused season after season. So far it has worked excellent.

We fenced off twenty-five percent of our four acre corn field. The fence went up around September 1 and to date not one deer has entered the fenced in area. As a matter of fact the lower wire of the fence appears to be low enough to block raccoons from entering the fenced in area. Keeping the coons out will significantly increase the food available to deer and turkeys once the fence has been removed. We have had more than a few visits from black bears this season, it appears that the bears aren’t willing to tackle the electric fence.

The main reason for the fence was to ensure food was available to the deer during the late season. As the deer start to clean up the open three acres of corn we will remove the fence and allow deer to feed on the remaining section of field. Saving a section of food plot with the fence will drastically increase the lifespan of the corn planting and provide food for wildlife using the WOW farm through out the winter. If your food plots have been consumed already, look into the Gallagher Fencing system at www.gallagherusa.com as a way to preserve food until later in the season.

Just about every aspect of wildlife is driven by the availability of food. If you can find the food you will find wildlife. Each deer walking in the north will consume nearly one ton of food per deer per year. During the spring and summer they focus on feeding on foods high in protein. As fall rolls around, soft mass becomes more of a preferred food. Once the temperatures start to drop they crave carbohydrates. Carbs are key during the late fall and winter months as deer try to maintain body weight while the snow flies. On the WOW site a good supply of carbohydrates will keep the deer from wandering to neighboring properties and help us achieve our management goals.

All fall we have been using every tool available to us to track the 2009 rut. The three Buckeye cameras have been pounding away twenty-four seven recording thousands of pics. If you were watching closely you should have noticed an increase in buck activity as the deer closed in on the breeding phase of the rut. The Buckeye cameras played out live on the WOW site giving users a chance to see first hand the changes in deer behavior associated with the rut. A second NY farm also was laced with cameras to capture note only buck movement but behavior. At this point, north of 30,000 photos have been recoded painting a clear picture of this years rut. The pictures have been an important tool in tracking behavior but equally important has been your comments and feedback about what your seeing in the woods. Keep up the good work this fall.

So where are we in regards to the rut? According to our observations and camera sightings our NY deer started to breed around the third of November. Personally our hunting camp kicked off the 2009 breeding season by witnessed one breeding party. A breeding party s where one hot doe has collected four or five bucks that are trying to breed her. And one tending doe chaise. Both events happened on the morning of November 3rd. Similar reports came in from across the north as hunters witnessed aggressive breeding behavior.

The breeding period typically lasts around two weeks with the majority of the breeding taking place during a seven day window within the middle of the breeding period. Ever wonder what the breeding period looks like on camera?

This nice nine point was tending a doe last night on camera. Based on the pics I would say she was either coming into or coming out of heat. From the pics the buck was focused on the doe concentrating on “cutting” her away from her fawns. The overall breeding process typically takes a couple of days. The fist day is spent “cutting” the doe as the buck tries to isolate her from her fawns and other bucks. With over 250K pics taken over the last couple years I have never documented a buck licking flanks or mounting a doe on or near a food plot. Based on the photo data, or lack there of, I would have to hypothesize that bucks drive the does to less public areas. Side hills, thickets or open goldenrod fields are likely place for a buck to breed. The doe will stand for the buck and allow him to breed her for 12 to 24 hours. Many times buck and doe movement is at a minimum. A good friend of mine often times observes bucks taking does out into a large goldenrod field. The breeding “bedroom” can be as small as fifty acres during the 12 to 24 hours the buck breeds the doe. The buck will often remain with the doe for a period of hours after she refuses to stand for him. All said and done a buck will typically stay with a doe for a couple of days when she is in heat.

Again, so where are we in the rut. We are solidly stuck in the breeding stage of the rut. Based on your comments most hunters are experiencing fest of famine in the woods. Big bucks are otherwise occupied and seldom coming to visit food plots. One day you may see five or six deer including a couple of bucks and the next nothing. A few days ago I hunted one of my best stands. I only can hunt the stand a day or two per year. The wind was just right and I knew I would run into a good buck. I slipped in quietly, rubs scrapes and deer trails were beaten into the mud. As I climbed into the stand I was silently thinking I should have brought more arrows, based on the sign I was going to be covered up with deer. Long story shortened, I sat for the entire afternoon and never saw a deer. I walked back to the truck only to hear a buck running the feet off a doe right next to the truck. So goes the breeding phase of the rut.

So what’s the hunting strategy this week and weekend? Bucks will continue to clean up the last estrous does over the rest of the week. Every hour you are in the stand could be a good one. On the back side of the breeding phase bucks will need a rest. Every property is different, but some within the next seven days bucks will start for form lose bachelor groups. Bucks will lie down and try to repair their battered bodies. For most of us starting around November 20th bucks will be noticeably absent. They will be bedded down near fat building food sources and limiting their movement. Yes, they still will search for girls but movement will be curtailed to a fraction of what it has been over the past couple of weeks. Younger bucks will be visible in food plots feeding in lose bachelor groups. Older bucks will also be visiting fields but mostly after dark. Your best bet is to hunt in the transition zones between bedding cover and food sources. Thick cover is the key but be careful, don’t push your bucks out of their bedding cover. Also watch your pics. Often times I will photograph an older buck hanging with younger bucks. This bachelor group can often remain intact for the next couple of weeks. These younger bucks can often times be more visible during daylight hours. If you see the younger bucks stay put their older brother might just be around the corner.

Let us know what your seeing, blog on the WOW site once you start to see bucks reforming bachelor groups.

I have spent the last week poring over thousands of pictures and can say that things are starting to get interesting in the deer woods. We are fast approaching prime time when bucks will start to aggressively cruise during daylight hours. For those of you monitoring the WOW cameras you might be a surprised, buck photos are way down over the last week. You should correctly wonder if the buck photos are down how can we be close to all hell breaking loose?

The answer; we are stuck in the yearly calm period. Let’s back up and evaluate what we have seen on cameras so far this season. The WOW cameras have done a great job this year documenting deer movement on our 200 acre test site. We initially started with about ten unique bucks using the farm. A few bucks left and a few new bucks showed up as testosterone levels elevated to their peak level around October 15. Buck photos were at their peak level for the season around the same period. The WOW cameras were showing dozens of photos daily of bucks feeding, sparing and just hanging around the food plots.

Many of the photos were taken during daylight hours. It was a good time to be in the woods. Not a lot of big buck activity but good deer movement. But things changed.

Around the 21st of October the photo number started to drop. Bucks were hard to find on camera, especially during daylight hours. So what happened did the neighbors kill all the deer already? Did hunting pressure on the WOW site spook the deer to neighboring properties? How about a food shift, did the deer switch to a new food source not visible on camera?

I am sure the neighbors killed a few deer already but the buck population remains fairly intact. The WOW property has only been hunted one evening so far this archery season so the low photo number is not related to hunting pressure. What about food shift, I visited the property two evenings ago to see if the deer has switched to the standing corn. Nope, I only saw one gray fox, couple of coons and one very brave skunk. Past experience has taught me the answer is bucks are laying down. Yup, it’s that simple, they are on their bellies right now and not very active. The lay down period is a critical marker that helps determine when bucks will again become active.

Ok, so what’s happening with the bucks on the WOW site? Deer physiology can explain. If you look back to an earlier blog I described how the testosterone level on bucks will double from September until around October 15th. During this time period bucks often experience 30% body weight gain. The buck photo level was at its peak as bucks finished packing on the pounds in the food plots. They were fattening themselves up in preparation for breeding when they will bleed off the 30% body weight gain. So where are the bucks now, they are fat and happy they don’t need more body weight so the desire to feed is not as high. Bucks have reached peak body condition and are in a holding pattern until does trigger the next segment of the fall rut.

Ok, we are all hunter what do we do when the bucks are laying down after they reach peak body condition. First and foremost don’t push them. Don’t chase them into bedding areas just because you aren’t seeing them around the food plots or transition areas. If you push them hard now you can make them nocturnal and very difficult to see in another week when they start moving on their own. If you are hunting mature bucks take some time and do a few more chores around the house, it’s a good time to earn brownie points and keep the pressure off the big guys. I raked the leaves yesterday and will forgo tonight’s evening hunt to take my father in-law to diner. Based on the ongoing camera survey I think we are getting very close but we have a few more days to go.

So here is how I see the next ten days playing out in the deer woods. A few lucky hunters will start to see good buck movement starting this weekend. Yearling bucks will be on their feet first followed by two year old bucks flexing their muscle. Dominant bucks will start to walk younger inferior bucks off of food plots and away from doe groups. When a more dominant bucks uses his body size to intimidate another buck and continues to pursue the lesser buck it is called “buck walking”. I am not talking about the little shoving matches we have been witnessing for the last month. Dominant buck walking can last five- ten minuets when bucks can be totally obsessed with one another. Expect to see quite a bit of body posturing within the next five days, this time the body posturing will be the real deal.

Bucks will start to more frequently use grunts while with does and snort-wheeze when confronted by other bucks. Bucks will not be focused on feeding just checking does. I would expect to see better daylight photos of older bucks starting this weekend. I will start hunting for the first time morning and evening starting this weekend. Buck pressure on does will increase until the middle of next week. Around November 4th doe family groups will start to disperse. Does will be sick of bucks midway through next week, they will do everything possible to avoid bucks including avoiding traditional social areas like food plots. The dispersal of does will make bucks cover more ground to find does. Good time to hunt ridges or any known funnels.

The above family of does will be scattered all over the WOW property once the bucks start to put pressure on the does.

Around the 6th of November good bucks will be on their feet hanging with does. If you observe this behavior it might look like the buck is tending the doe but they are just hanging close. He may hang with a doe for an hour or half a day before he switches to another doe. I usually don’t see long chaises during this period of deer behavior. Bucks just seem to want to be close to the girls at this time. This will last a day or two and then…

Well, the next phase is the frantic chasing period when bucks are seeking does for breeding. Based on the WOW cameras and other camera research I estimate around November 8th bucks will be on their feet and running hard! Daylight photos of bucks streaking through plots with their mouth gaping wide should show up between November 8th and 11th. The “magic time” usually only last a couple of days and then the breeding starts. Bucks will run regardless of weather, rain or shine they will move. Several years ago the “magic time” started while we had 60mph gusts of wind. It was so windy I couldn’t make a twenty yard shot with a bow but still had a ball watching the bucks run does. One factor that can mute the “magic time” is temperature. Buck movement will be significantly reduced when the temperature is above 45. They will still run but they will have to frequently rest to cool.

Of course there will be some properties that kick in a little early and a few that are later but if you have been saving your vacation time for hunting season November 4th – 11th should be dynamite. I will be in the treestand sun up till sun down if possible during those days.

I’ll be blogging more frequently over the next couple of weeks on our new and improved website: www.whitetailsonlynation.com (premiering soon) to let you know what we are seeing from the treestand and on camera. I’ll be discussing hunting strategy as the next couple of weeks plays out. Let us know what you are seeing? Blog when you see your first three year old bucks during daylight hours on camera or from the treestand. Let us know if you are seeing good bucks chasing does as you drive to and from work.

The cameras have been telling an interesting tale over the past week. Things are starting to heat up and the fall hunting season in quickly becoming very interesting. For those of you following the WOW cameras online you may have noticed a few new bucks showing up on camera over the past couple of days. Good news for those of us following the rut, great news if you’re lucky enough to be hunting.

So what’s happening? Biologically speaking, bucks experience a testosterone increase as the fall approaches. Around the first of September the boys of the woods start to experience meaningful increases in testosterone. It takes about forty-five days for the testosterone level to peak. How much of an increase you may wonder? The testosterone level doubles between September and mid October. Let that sink in for a moment, could you imaging what it would be like to double your testosterone level, let alone double it in a forty-five day period, talk about inducing full blown “road rage.” Not only are bucks becoming more aggressive but they will often gain about thirty percent body weight during the same forty-five day period.

We have been witnessing the changes on the WOW cameras. Check out the body posture on the buck on the right, he looks like a 2.5 year old, ears are back as he struts over to the yearling on the left. The rack buck is all bowed up and looking tough. The photo of the 1.5 year old buck tells the story clearly. He is crouched and looks scared. The rack buck probably beat up the smaller buck within the last couple of days. Older bucks are still hanging with loose bachelor groups but the fraternity has changed in the past couple of weeks. Older bucks are starting to command respect.

So what stage of the rut are we in right now? If the fall rut was a drag race, the cars are on the line, engines are revved and the light is just about ready to change from yellow to green! Max testosterone should be reached in our bucks within one more week and the bucks will be physically ready to drop the hammer and stir up the deer woods. Now don’t get me wrong, the boys might be ready but we are going to have to wait for the does to flip the switch before things start happening at 200mph. More than likely we still are still a month away from does coming into estrous.

The above buck is starting to harass the does but don’t be confused, we still have quite a bit of time before bucks start aggressively running does. Young bucks will do most of the harassing over the next couple of weeks. Older buck usually don’t waste energy chasing does until it’s much closer to breeding season.

So what’s the hunting strategy? The big deer are still basing their movements around consuming food. Look for good deer around the best food sources on your property. The big bucks are still virtually nocturnal. You might have a chance of catching a good buck on a food plot but you will have an easier time getting close to a good deer if you are hunting between his bedding area and the feeding area. A few good deer are being taken right now but the best is still yet to come. Look for bigger buck activity during days of below average temperature. It’s still early in the season to use grunt tubes and rattling antlers.

Our WOW cameras are documenting the action. Last Sunday was the first data point we will use to help track the rut. October 4th was the day we closed the books and calculated all the different bucks using the WOW property. On a weekly basis we will keep track of the new bucks photographed.

This is a new buck on the WOW farm. He showed up at 3:30 am, looks like he just passed through. Hopefully, he liked what he saw and will be back for the food plots and girls. I would like to have been able to see his rear a little more in the picture to age him, but his front end is much larger that a yearling buck’s. Based his neck and shoulders I would say he is 2.5 years old. Keep your eyes peeled for another photo of him; it will be easier to age him with a better body angle.

Let us know what you’re seeing on your deer cameras each week. New bucks showing up on camera is a measurement of how bucks are moving and can be linked to how close your deer are to breeding. As we keep track of the WOW site and others scattered across the north we will have a good idea how your deer acre acting and develop real time hunting strategies based on the distinct stages of the fall rut.

Sunday night found me pouring over deer camera picks as we kick off the 2009 rut tracking. The WOW site has been consistently producing a good array of buck photos. We are averaging around 100 picks per night and picking up couple of good looking younger bucks.

I pulled the PC cards off our second research site Sunday afternoon. We had about six thousand picks over the past week. I am still printing each bucks mug shot but it looks like we photographed around fifteen different bucks last week. I’ll give the cameras another week in hopes of finding a few more unique bucks before setting the starting number used to monitor the rut.

This fall is proving to be difficult to identify unique bucks in NY. Typically, the easiest way to perform a deer survey is to pre-bait a location for a couple of weeks with corn then place the cameras and continue baiting for two more weeks. The corn concentrates feeding and allows the cameras to capture some high quality close-ups. However, it is illegal to put any food out in NYS even for camera census work. In NY the best method for photographing deer is to stake out a food source. For the time being the WOW cameras are all situated on food plots to capture as many deer as possible during feeding.

The difficulty lies in staying on top of preferred food sources. The food plots are no doubt attractive but they may not be the most attractive food source for a given week. The Clover Ridge food plot has been planted with a mixture of clover and chicory. Both food sources are high in protein and attractive during spring, summer, and fall. You may have noticed the plot has had very little feeding activity over the past couple of weeks. The difficulty lies in the food sources surrounding the plot. The north and west side of the plot is an oak woods that is dropping both red and white acorns right now. The southern side of the plots is loaded with soft mast. Berries and fruits are in abundance right now and the deer are pulling off the food plots to take advantage of the bounty. FYI the highest number of photos taken last week was at the base of a pear tree not in food plots.

Look carefully at the picks they can tell you a lot about the deer woods.

Take for example this image from Clover Ridge. Deer are moving quickly past camera as they travel to more preferred food sources located off camera. The plot is not documenting a lot of head down slow feeding behavior. However, be watchful for a change in behavior. The first few heavy frosts will kill many of preferred foods deer are currently on and some of the soft and hard mast sources will be cleaned up. In a couple of weeks more deer will be feeding in this plot.

For those of you lucky enough to be out hunting keep in mind food preferences are changing rapidly this time of year. As soon as the acorns (white before red) or apples or one of a dozen preferred foods are cleaned up they move on to something else. Deer are packing on the pounds right now, bucks will pack on 30% of their body weight starting September 1 and ending around October 15th. Energy foods pack on the pounds. Acorns, beechnuts, and virtually all fruits and berries are highly sought this time of year. Concentrate your hunting efforts around these specialized food sources. Pay attention to the weather in your hunting area. Not just the day you are planning on hunting but the days preceding it as well. Deer know wind storms knock fruit and mast off trees. An apple tree with no ground fruit last week can have a bushel of fruit on the ground after a blow. Hunting around fruit trees is typically better during or immediately following a wind storm. Typically, deer start using food plots heavily once again after the “candy” has been cleaned up.

Keep the cameras rolling and keep cataloguing your bucks. We still have one more week until our initial buck census will be complete.

It’s time to start tracking the 2009 rut. This season we will use a total of eleven cameras on two different parcels of land in South Western New York. We’ll be looking at a number of rut ramp-up indicators but if you are going to be on top of the rut it’s time to start documenting unique buck sightings. To do that, you will need to strategically place cameras and document the different (unique) bucks that pass by the camera sites from now until the rut is over in late December. Feeding areas like food plots and brushy fields are good locations as are natural travel areas like funnels and well used ridges. It’s best to leave your cameras in one location through the entire season.

Your initial survey will take place from now until Sunday October 4th. The number of bucks counted within this time represents the number of bucks using your sites. That will serve as your baseline.

After the initial survey the unique bucks will be counted on a weekly basis. For example, our unique bucks could be ten bucks from now until October 4th. The week of October 4-11 two new bucks might show that we haven’t photographed before. Week one would be reported as +2 bucks. This process will be repeated weekly for the next couple of months and ultimately be part of a pilot study we are conducting.

So what? What’s the big deal with tracking new bucks showing up on the two farms? What does that have to do with tracking the rut? New bucks showing up in front of the cameras will track how much ground bucks are covering in the neighborhood as well as track the big old boys as they pull out of the sanctuaries on each farm. Experienced deer watchers generally agree that buck activity ramps up a the rut progresses and older age bucks come out of seclusion for rare appearances as they begin looking for does. This activity increase is sometimes seen on the deer stand and almost always recorded on game cameras. Weekly counting bucks will give real time scouting information that will help determine when, where, and how to hunt. It’s all in the cameras.

If you have cameras, follow along with the project and report back to us weekly with your observations. No cameras, no problem. Help me out by looking out for new bucks showing up on our WOW cameras. I sometimes miss sightings (especially after dark) that another pair of eyes might pick up. Send us your report. The more eyes the better.

A little hint: Print a “mug shot” of each buck and keep it in a file. Use the printed photo to compare to new bucks showing up on camera. Some bucks we photograph early might take a walk about and not return for a month or more. Don’t count them twice as uniques.

Please keep your unique buck data, do week by week counts. We will be asking you to share it with us after the season as part of a massive WO Nation deer study. This year we are doing the “pilot” study. Next year we will refine the study and gather camera data from thousands of locations across the WO Nation. Start now and help the WO Nation make whitetail history by being part of one of the largest whitetail deer studies ever. Plus, keeping track of the rut will help you put that big boy in the freezer.

A frequent question I have been asked over the past couple of weeks is if I am seeing any bucks that have pealed their velvet. Jim from Central New York fired off a couple of pictures last week in an email that showed two nice bucks. One buck still was in velvet while the other had shed his velvet and was sporting a polished rack. Jim writes:

Interesting, my two farms, three miles apart, I believe both are 3 1/2 year old bucks. One has the velvet all removed, the other still in velvet. I am seeing rubs in the woods, now I know why. A nice 9 and a very high 10 pointer.

Should be a great hunting season. Am seeing multiple other bucks. The real big boys won’t show up until the end of October on the cameras when the action starts to heat up. -Jim

For most of us in New York bucks typically start to peel their velvet around Labor Day weekend. Most scientists agree that the peeling process is driven by photoperiodism. That is, the duration of daylight that enters the deer’s eye. As the days shorten and the daily duration of daylight diminishes bucks start to enter into the initial stages of the chaos of the breading season. The first step of which is to peel velvet.

Our Buckeye camera project also has been documenting the shedding of velvet process. The first to peel was brought to our attention by Chris who wrote:

Did I see what I thought I saw on the Ridge Clover Food Plot last night? Looks like one of the eight’s peeled already. -Chris

In fact, the first bucks started to show up on camera with freshly cleaned antlers on September 3.

A nice yearling eight point buck and a two year old buck are pictured in the photo above. The younger buck has pealed while the older buck is still in velvet.

The peeling process typically is a short one. It appears that the velvet irritates or itches a buck. As he worries his antlers at some point he will cut the skin of the still blood filled velvet. As the velvet starts to bleed he will frantically start to thrash his antlers in brush or rub against small trees to quickly peel his newly hardened antlers. The entire process can be over in as short as a few hours or as long as a day or two. It’s not uncommon for a buck to eat the protein rich velvet strips once it is pulled from his rack. Could be he is looking for nutrients or maybe he just wants to hide the bloody evidence in an attempt to hide his presence from predators.

What are you seeing? Are the bucks peeling velvet in your neck of the woods? Anybody catch a photo of a buck half in velvet and half out? Join Ray and others as we document and discuss deer behavior during the 2009 rut. Ray writes:

Looks like most of the bucks are hard horned now. We’ve seen a few high 120 – low 130 class. Seems like a lot more 2-2/2 year olds than in the past maybe because of all the food (I hope). Still not a lot of does in open, caught a few on cam at night, but that will change as it always has in the past. How about you guys? -Ray
